Originally known as electroshock therapy, ECT was first introduced by a pair of Italian psychiatrists in 1938. However, the use of induced seizures to treat mental illness dates back as far as the early 1500s. It became a popular psychiatric technique during the 1940s and 1950s, particularly in the treatment of severe depression. Stigma attached to the use of ECT led to a decline in its use during the 1960s. The emergence of effective psychiatric medications to treat depression also contributed to its decline. Today, electroconvulsive therapy is still used as a treatment for cases of treat-ment resistant depression and some other psychiatric conditions including bipolar disorder and psychosis, although its use remains controversial. Statistics Approximately 70% of ECT patients are women.One study found that 42.8% of people who had ECT achieved remission of depressive disorder symptoms.??Memory loss is one of the most commonly reported side effects of ECT.An estimated one million people worldwide have ECT each year.??Between 1975 and 1980, there was a 46% decline in ECT use in the United States.??ECT use remained steady throughout the 1980s and even began to rise through the next decade.More than a third of ECT patients are age 65 and older.??Use in children and teens remains relatively rare. By 1941 electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was used by nearly half of the mental health institutions in the United States. ECT has been found effective for some patients who are unresponsive to other therapies, including antidepressant drugs. One way to decrease the possibility of brain damage in the areas of stimulation is to use it minimally only when other treatment methods have failed. The evidence supporting the efficacy of ECT in depression is overwhelming. In several studies, ECT was found to be far more effective than other methods. There is still a significant stigma attached to its use, so it is used sparingly. Side Effects Side effects from ECT include memory loss (often short-term but sometimes permanent), fractured bones, headaches, and even death. Serious complications do exist, particularly the risk for permanent brain damage. Research suggests that ECT can be a safe and effective procedure to treat depression, psychosis, catatonia, and suicidality. Several treatments may be needed to see a lasting effect.?? Social anxiety is the fear of being in a group organization; it can, however, be restricted to a certain situation. I have self-diagnosed myself with social anxiety. I believe that I have social anxiety because I overthink situations that other people think nothing of and when I am about to give a presentation or even send a text in a group message I contemplate it for a long time. I want to change this because it causes problems in my life and makes it harder for me to do the things I want do to. 7 Things to Do the Summer Before Starting Graduate School Starting graduate school this fall? Like most soon-to-be grad students youââ¬â¢re probably both excited and anxious for classes to begin. What should you do between now and the beginning of your first semester as a graduate student? Relax Although you may be tempted to read ahead and get an early start on your studies, you should make time to relax. Youââ¬â¢ve spent years working to get through college and make it into graduate school. Youââ¬â¢re about to spend more years in graduate school and face more challenges and higher expectations than you encountered in college. Avoid burnout before the semester even begins. Take time off to relax or you may find yourself fried by October. Try Not to Work This may not be possible for most students, but remember that is the last summer that you will be free from academic responsibilities. Graduate students work during the summer. They do research, work with their advisor, and perhaps teach summer classes. If you can, take the summer off from work. Or at least cut back on your hours. If you must work, make as much downtime as you can. Consider leaving your job, or if you plan to continue working during the school year, consider taking a vacation two to three weeks before the semester starts. Introduction Punishment is a process through which ââ¬Å"the consequence of a response decreases the likelihood that the response will recurâ⬠(Gray, 2002, pp.115). Further, punishment can be seen as an effort to decrease the response rate to stimuli by either removing a desired stimulus or presenting one which is undesired (Gray, 2002). Recent studies suggest that punishment can be an effective method of behaviour modification. However, as reported in Lerman and Vorndran (2002), there are a number of limitations to punishment as an intervention and subsequent negative side effects. For this reason, certain principles upon which the implementation of a successful punishment is dependent must be adhered to. In accordance to these findings, this essay will contend that whilst there are alternative means to operant conditioning, certain punishment techniques have been proven to be effectual and in some aspects advantageous. The effectiveness of punishment à à à à à ââ¬Å"Punishment is one of the most used, but least understood and badly administered, aspects of learningâ⬠(Luthans, 1977, pp.300). As mentioned earlier, punishment is anything which weakens behaviour and tends to decrease it in subsequent frequency. Positive punishment is the method of administering negative consequences upon the occurrence of an action whereas Negative punishment involves the termination of positive consequences. In order to work, either case must weaken and decrease the behaviour which preceded the application or withdrawal of the stimuli. Skinner (1953) stipulated that we must defy the urge to label a form of stimuli as ââ¬Å"desiredâ⬠or ââ¬Å"undesiredâ⬠as a whole but rather to identify them by their effect on the observed subject. Whether punishment is effective depends on the criteria applied or the objectives to be achieved. That is, before we can say it is useful we must ask whether we desire an immediate or a lasting effect, and at how high a cost. There is some evidence to suggest that when punishment is administered in the form of aversive stimulation, it acts to suppress behaviour temporarily. When it is withdrawn, the punished behaviour rapidly gains strength. If the punishment is more severe and given consistently, it may act to suppress behaviour for a longer period of time (Skinner, 1953). I want to go to fort Leavenworth tomorrow and join the Kansas volunteers.â⬠(Jeff) 4 Nouns- soldier, hero, Kansas, brother, unioner. Adjectives- loyal, strong, eager, fearless, good. Verbs- fights, works, enjoys. 5 The reasons are, John wants to see the world and David, like Jeff, simply wants to be a soldier. 6 David receives anger from his mother and she will not let him stay. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s what youââ¬â¢ve always wanted, so go on now back to the army.â⬠(Davidââ¬â¢s mother) 7 One hard lesson is how quickly you can get hurt in the army, like Ford Ivey. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t wanta live if I hafta be a hopeless cripple for life!â⬠(Ford p.71).
